My check engine light came on, so I took it to the official service center and they threw this massive estimate at me for a part replacement plus hours of labor. It feels like they just look at the car model and multiply the price by ten. A friend of mine suggested I try a small shop near his apartment, and it got me thinking about the advantages of community based mechanics. They probably don't have the fancy branded waiting rooms, but I bet they also don't have the massive overheads that force them to overcharge.
